New FCC filing reinforces LG Nexus 5 theory – likely to be D

We started off the month with a spate of developments concerning the next Nexus smartphone, presumed to launch as the Nexus 5. We saw some hardware in a Google video, and then an FCC filing for the LG D820 sure appeared to nicely align with that find. All the pieces of evidence was seeming to reinforce each other, until @evleaks came forward with a leak identifying the LG D821 as a CDMA G2 variant, implying that the D820 might just be more of the same. A new development at the FCC helps to set all this straight, with the publication of the docs for the D821 itself.

The big news here? The FCC docs clearly paint the D821 to be a GSM/HSPA+/LTE device, without a hint of EV-DO or other CDMA support. That means that the leak we saw was wrong, and once again leaves the door open for that Nexus 5 = D820 theory to run wild.

This is welcome news, and helps resolve some of the issues we had with that notion that the D820 and D821 would be similar phones, like how their dimension just didn’t line up. Even @evleaks himself took to Twitter this morning to voice his own pleasure in being wrong about the phone.

With the Nexus 4 selling out in more and more markets around the world, we wonder how much time can really be left before the Nexus 5 launches.
